NASA Deep Space Network, live
Three sites spaced around the world keep a spacecraft in view as the Earth turns: Goldstone (California), Madrid (Spain) and Canberra (Australia). This is who is talking to whom right now.
Listen to the ISS yourself
Astronauts sometimes talk to schoolchildren and radio amateurs through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) programme. With a cheap handheld radio (or a software-defined radio) and a clear view of the sky you can hear them as the station flies over.
- Voice and school contacts, SSTV pictures145.800 MHz (FM, downlink)
- APRS packet radio145.825 MHz
Frequencies and activity change. Check ariss.org for what is active, and make sure you are licensed to transmit; listening needs no licence in most countries. The signal shifts a little in frequency as the station moves (Doppler).
