Millions of Americans will be closing out 2025 will brutal winter weather. An estimated 67 million people remain under wind alerts across the Northeast and New England, including metropolitan areas stretching from Washington, D.C., to Boston, according to an NBC News analysis. Wind gusts will get as strong as 50 mph in Boston, 45 mph in New York and 40 mph in the nation’s capital. Areas downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario can expect an additional 12-24 inches of snow with locally higher mounts up to 36 inches.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a state of emergency in part of the state on Friday in response to a snowstorm and expanded it statewide on Monday.More than 120,000 Americans were without power as of Tuesday morning, according to outage tracker website PowerOutage.us. Outages were most pronounced in Michigan, with more than 45,000 homes without power, while New York and Pennsylvania each had more than 17,000 homes without power. The strong winds come amid one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, with millions of Americans heading to airports for New Year’s Eve celebrations.As of Tuesday morning, there have been 755 total flight delays and 140 cancellations within, into or out of the United States, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. More than 10,000 flights were delayed nationwide on Sunday, according to the site.
