Ethiopian runner Shewarge Alene has died aged 30, the organiser of the Stockholm marathon has confirmed.Alene won the race – her most recent competition – in the Swedish capital in May.She competed in 27 marathons as a professional between 2011 and 2025, recording 12 victories.”It is with deep sorrow that we have received the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025,” the Stockholm marathon posted on Instagram, external.”Shewarge Alene became unwell during a training session and was taken to hospital, where sadly, her life could not be saved. “Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”Alene recorded a personal best time of 2:27:26 in Cape Town, South Africa in 2023.
